PhD Pipeline workshop works to increase minority count

While minorities are nearly a third of the U.S. population, African-Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans are estimated to be only four percent of the faculty of business schools nationwide, primarily because minorities do not apply to PhD programs

That’s part of the information students learned during the PhD Pipeline Opportunity workshop on November 29, 2011 in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU). The event was organized by Antoinette Smith, who teaches accounting and is the FIU leader of the program, a national initiative originating from Duke University.

PhD in Business Administration

The objective of the PhD in Business Administration is to prepare you for a career in academia by building your understanding of the substantive domains and literature within your selected area of concentration. The PhD program provides you with the methodological and analytical tools required for executing research and creating knowledge. It develops your skills in formulating, conducting, and communicating quality research. In the process, it also fosters your ability to teach effectively.

The PhD program typically requires four years of full-time study: two-and-a-half years of coursework and summer projects, and a year-and-a-half of dissertation research.

You will take a minimum of sixteen courses, with at least six of them in your chosen area of concentration. You also will complete summer research projects under faculty supervision.

The last date to apply for admission into the PhD. programs in various disciplines in the College of Business Administration is February 15, 2014.
