For all applicants including International and Non-Florida resident applicants

Deadline:

Deadline means that all the documents such as your completed application form, application fees, official GMAT/GRE scores, official transcripts, Statement of Purpose document (SOP) and recommendation letters should be on file in the PhD Program Office.

Any missing document will constitute that your application to the PhD Program is not complete. This may delay the admission process.

Please download the Recommendation Letter Form (RLF) and give it to the person who is going to write the recommendation letter on your behalf and transmit it to the PhD Program office at cruiz012@fiu.edu.

2. Application Fee

Irrespective of your country of origin, the PhD Program application fee CANNOT be waived under any circumstance.

3. Admission Requirements

Please see the Field of Study

4. Test Scores

Only the official GMAT or GRE scores sent directly to the Admissions Office of the Florida International University will be considered.

The minimum score required by the University Graduate School (UGS) in order to be considered for admission in any of the PhD Program, you must have obtained 590 in GMAT or 1140 in GRE (Verbal + Quantitative Only). We do not require Subject GRE score. However, this minimum score will not guarantee you admission into any of the CBA PhD programs. Your admission into the program and request for financial assistance will be based upon not only your GMAT and/or GRE score but other factors such as Grade Point Average (GPA), Graduate Degree, whether you graduated from an AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), Statement of Purpose document and Letters of Recommendation.

Usually, if you require financial assistance then your GMAT/GRE score has to considerably higher than the minimum required score.

For example, in the year 2007, the average GMAT score of the applicants who received financial assistance in the Department of Finance was around 670.

5. Declaration of Certificate of Finances (DCF) document

Every student irrespective of his/her country of origin must submit a DCF document to the University Graduate School certifying that the candidate will have sufficient funds to cover the expenses (tuition and living) for at least four years.

6. Financial Assistance

The following types of financial assistance are available.

i) Presidential Fellowship: - http://gradschool.fiu.edu/fellowships.html (Available to all applicants irrespective of their citizenship status)

ii) Presidential Teaching Fellowship (Available to all applicants irrespective of their citizenship status)

iii) McKnight Fellowship http://www.fefonline.org/mdf.html  Available only to minority (Hispanic and African-Americans) U.S citizens.

iv) CBA PhD Assistantship – The College of Business Administration awards limited number of PhD Graduate Research & Teaching Assistantships (RA and TA). The Assistantship includes Tuition Fee waiver irrespective of your country of origin and $20,000 financial assistance per year.

If you receive the Research Assistantship, then you are required to teach one course per semester beginning the second semester of your admission date.

If you receive the Teaching Assistantship, then you are required to teach two courses per semester beginning the second semester of your admission date. There are three semesters in an academic year, namely Fall, Spring and Summer.

Irrespective of the type of the financial award you have received, you have to pay approximately $150/semester towards the student health fees, parking fees and athletic fee.

The international students are required to pay 25% of the total international student health insurance premium. In the year 2006-07, it amounts to $400/year.

The CBA financial assistantship is guaranteed only for a period of three years. It can be extended to the fourth year provided you have been advanced to the candidacy and working on your dissertation (for the meaning of candidacy see provide link). Even this guarantee for the first three years is dependent on your satisfactory completion of the course work and field of study requirements (see field of study link)

The Department of your field of study or the College of Business Administration does not provide any living accommodation to students. However, you can contact the FIU Housing Office at www.fiu.edu/~housing/

For International Students Only

Besides the above admission requirements you must also have taken TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) if you are a resident of non-English speaking country. The recent immigration requirements have been very stringent and time consuming. Therefore, you are advised to start the admissions process at least six to seven months in advance in order to meet the deadline. Some other requirements applicable only to international students are given below.

Issuance of I-20 for F-1 visa:

F-1 visa is typically issued to the student for a period of five years. The issuance of F-1 visa by the Department of Homeland Security through the U.S Embassy/Consulate in your country of residence is contingent upon you having the I-20 Form issued to you by the Florida International University. The University will issue the I-20 Form only after you have been admitted into the program and have been offered the financial assistance. If you do not have financial assistance from the university you must a DCF (see above) on file to the satisfaction of the University before the issuance of the I-20 Form. Note that these are the requirements of the Government of the United States. Your home country may have other requirements.
