Dr. de la Torre served  as Dean of the Alvah H. Chapman, Jr., Graduate School of Business from July  2002 until December 2007. He currently holds the position of J.K. Batten Eminent Scholar Chair in Strategy.

A distinguished expert in the field of international  business, de la Torre was recently professor at UCLA’s Anderson School,  where he served as chair of the Strategy and Organization area and founding director of UCLA’s  Center for International Business Education and Research. He also held faculty positions at INSEAD (Fontainebleau, France) and Georgia State  University, and was a research fellow at the Harvard Business School. He has  held visiting appointments at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Chile), Universidad  del Valle (Colombia), INCAE (Nicaragua), Theseus Institute (France), and the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden).  He is the author of several books including Nine Investments Abroad and Their Impact at Home, Exports  of Manufactured Goods from Developing Countries: Marketing Factors and the Role of Foreign Enterprise, The Activities of IT Multinationals in the European Community, Managing the Global Corporation and others. His research on multinational corporations, international investment, the  evolution of corporate structures in Latin America and the management of international alliances has appeared in several refereed journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Management  Science, California Management Review, European Management Review, Management Research and others. He was President of the Academy of International Business and the European  International Business Association, and is a member of the Strategic  Management Society, the Academy of Management, and the Business Association for Latin American Studies.   
  
Dr. de la Torre serves on the Board of Directors of MphasiS Corporation, an international IT services company headquartered in India, and of Quantum Group, Inc., a health care provider in Florida, and of Espiritu Santo Bank in Miami, as well as on several international advisory boards for universities in Europe and Latin America.
