Professional Activities

David Wernick is an instructor in the College’s Department of Management and International Business. His research has focused on global business and public policy, political risk, and the impact of terrorism and antiterrorism measures on the conduct of international business. Mr. Wernick’s study for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, “The Impact of Post-9/11 Security Measures on South Florida’s International Business Community,” won an FIU-Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) award in 2004 for best research study, and received national and international media coverage.

Mr. Wernick has presented his research on global terrorism and corporate security at a number of international academic symposia, including competitive sessions of the Academy of International Business 2006 annual meeting in Beijing, the 2005 Business Association of Latin American Studies annual conference in Madrid, and the 2005 Association for Global Business annual meeting in Miami. He has also presented his research to the State of Florida’s Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors and the Executive Board of Enterprise Florida, the public-private partnership responsible for leading Floridas statewide economic development efforts.

Mr. Wernick teaches a variety of undergraduate courses at FIU, including International Business, International Risk Assessment, Business in Latin America, and Organizations and Management. He has also developed a graduate-level distance learning course entitled “National Security and Defense Strategy,” for the Inter-American Defense College in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining FIU in 2002, Mr. Wernick worked as senior analyst for Latin America and the Caribbean with The Ackerman Group LLC, a Miami-based international security consultancy, and was director of communications for New York-based Council of the Americas, the leading U.S.-based business association committed to promoting open markets, democracy and respect for the rule of law throughout the Americas. Mr. Wernick has also served as editor of the Latin America Advisor, a daily intelligence brief for senior executives of Fortune 500 companies with business activities in the region, and Foreign Affairs Specialist for the Office of International Affairs at the Florida Department of State.

Mr. Wernick received his B.A. in Political Science from Tulane University and M.A. in International Studies from Florida International University. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the Management and International Business program at FIU. Mr. Wernick is the author of numerous academic and policy-oriented studies including “Terror Incognito: International Business in an Era of Heightened Geopolitical Risk,” in Gabriele Suder (ed.) Corporate Strategy Under Terrorism and Adversity (Edward Elgar, 2006), and “Globalization and its Impact on Florida’s Industry, Workforce and Environment: Public Policy Dimensions,” in Mark Amen (ed.) Florida’s Global Frontiers: Impacts of Trade Liberalization (University of South Florida Globalization Research Center, 2005).
