MSMIS program meets needs of student with drive.
Angie Mathews travels. A lot. Her job with Cerner Corporation, a consulting firm that provides healthcare software, takes her to different hospitals in South Florida every day. So when Mathews decided that she wanted a Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MSMIS), she looked for a program that would be flexible enough to enable her to continue to work.

Her busy schedule turned out to be one of the primary reasons she chose the College's program. It was the only such program in the area that wasn't online and that still allowed her to travel.

Mathews goes to different hospitals from Monday through Thursday and then works from home on Fridays, doing administrative tasks and preparing for her courses, all of which take place on Saturdays. It's a heavy load but worth it, she said.

Students in FMA successfully mix business and pleasure.
Dania Gonzalez has been a direct beneficiary of her tenure as president of Florida International University's chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA). When she graduates, Gonzalez will go to work for national accounting firm Ernst & Young. Her job came about because the FMA routinely invites firms such as Ernst & Young to send recruiters to speak at its monthly meetings.

It was at just such a session that Gonzalez met with an E&Y recruiter, submitted her resume, and will now attend the University of Virginia to get an MBA, courtesy of her new employer.

Gonzalez's experience is typical. In fact, three out of the four members of the executive board of FMA have job offers in hand. Other members of the group do also.

Busy hurricane season challenges busy BBA+ student.
Senior BBA+ student Nick Sacco had always wanted to do volunteer work. After hurricane Charley wreaked havoc on the west coast of Florida in early August 2004, he decided to get some training with the Red Cross to prepare for hurricanes in years to come.

He got his opportunity much sooner than he expected. Charley was followed quickly by hurricanes Frances and then Jeanne-this time much closer to home. Both storms struck the east coast of Florida only a month apart.

Sacco, who is enrolled in the BBA+ program at the Pines Center in Broward County-one of the areas hit by the storms- put his training to work immediately, assisting the Red Cross with damage assessment and helping people find a place to live right after the disaster.

Technology-enabled courses offer flexible alternative to classroom instruction.
Ten years ago, Maria Asencio graduated in the top ten percent of her high school class. Intending to continue her education, she got married and took on new responsibilities, including working to help support her family. As a result, she put her college education on the back burner. Now, after getting an associate's degree at Miami-Dade Community College, Asenscio has enrolled in the College. However, life remains hectic and getting to class poses a challenge.

That's where technology-enabled or online courses came to her rescue. They give her the kind of flexibility she needs to balance family, work, and her education. She's one of the nearly 4,000 students who enroll in some, or all, of their third and fourth years of business coursework from home and office, according to Moe Izadpanah, director of the College's Office of Online Learning.

Asencio works on her courses from home in the evenings and on weekends.

"Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep, so I just log in to my course and get some work done," she said.

MBA student helps Guatemalan farmers market new crop.
MBA student Shalni Chadwani didn't know much about agriculture but she does understand marketing. Using the knowledge and skills she has gained through her coursework in the College, she was able to assist a group of farmers in Guatemala who were looking to expand their product lines. The result has benefited both.

Chadwani's efforts were part of a cooperative effort among a number of different groups, including the College and Winrock International, an international aid firm founded by former Arkansas governor Winthrop Rockefeller in the 1950s. Another was ATA/AGEXPRONT, the Guatemalan Non-Traditional Products Exporters Association, which helps farmers or producers obtain the know-how to grow their businesses and help the Central American country's economy. In this instance, that know-how came in the form of MBA student Chadwani.

Her challenge was unique. Guatemalan farmers had a plan to grow Asian vegetables such as bok choy, Chinese eggplant, Thai cucumbers, and others, primarily for export. However, the growers also were required to sell a percentage of their products inside Guatemala. But how? And to whom?

Online Business in Society student reports on his volunteer experience in Ecuador.
Lori Deaton, who teaches an online "Business in Society" course in the College, required all of her students last year to do volunteer work in their communities. What follows is a report submitted by her student, Jose Ferando Ycaza, about his experience.

My Trip to Bastión

Rotary International is an organization devoted to helping those in need. My parents have belonged to the Rotary Club since I was a little child. As I grew up, I started joining them for community service and field trips. I really enjoyed it and that's how I felt motivated to join them.

Rotaract is a branch of the Rotary Club whose members are young people from the community like me. It's really amazing because we are all friends, and once you join Rotaract, you will have 31 new friends to help people by doing community service, or to just hang out with and go to the movies or to parties.

We have weekly meetings every Tuesday and we elect our president by voting. Our president, who is one of my best friends, keeps us up to date about the club and also looks for projects along with the help of the rest of us members. Then, we get together in the club house and decide which is the best day for everyone to attend. We usually go out and help the community once or in some cases twice a month.
