Alternative Spring Break changes lives across borders.
"Nothing could have prepared us for what we experienced."

"Now that I know what is out there, I want to dedicate my life to these people. I want to take our knowledge and resources and help others."

"I can't even express in words how much this trip has changed my life. I learned about them, the project, and myself."

These are just a few of the comments from participants in an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) that took twenty undergraduate students, two graduate assistants, and one professor from Florida International University to Thailand to work at one of two sites: a day camp at an elementary school in the Kloy Toey slum district of Bangkok and a state-of-the-art campus of the Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women (APSW).

Student saves Motorola thousands and lands job.
When he was assisting on a cost-reduction analysis during a finance internship at Motorola, College of Business Administration student Jean Pierre Gil noticed the company was being charged a small surplus by a supplier.

"The extra price per piece was pennies," Gil said. "But over millions of pieces, it added up."

To the tune of $152,746.00!

That's the savings Motorola achieved from Gil's findings. And it helped this finance major secure a job with the company after his May 2005 graduation.

A new equation: BBA+ Weekend x 2 = Love.
As a courtesy to their professors, BBA+ Weekend students do not slip into class late. If they arrive when a lecture has begun, they wait outside the classroom for a break. And in one case, such courtesy paid off, in more ways than showing good manners.

When Shirley Baldiris was tardy for the beginning of a BBA+ Weekend session, she dutifully stayed in the hall. Victor Andrades, a BBA+ Weekend student from another cohort, was on a break from his class in the adjoining room. Though they had met before, the result of their chance meeting that day in May 2002 was an August 31, 2003 wedding, shortly after Shirley finished her degree.

International students bridge to professional futures with ADBA.
Students from around the world are finding it easier to move into graduate work or take their next career steps thanks to the College's Advanced Diploma in Business Administration (ADBA).

For Alexander George, with a bachelor of commerce from the University of New Delhi in India, and Charlotte Martin, with a master's degree in corporate law from the University of Paris X-Nanterre in Paris, France, the one-year, intensive ADBA program offered an ideal transition to the next phase of their life plans.

The program serves as a pre-MBA general business education preparatory program for students new to business courses or business students who need to raise their GPAs for graduate admission. It gives graduates of three-year bachelor's programs-such as George's-a "fourth year" to improve their chances for admission to graduate programs. And it functions as a stand-alone program for students who want a non-degree program that includes practical training-the case for Martin.

MSF proves to be worthwhile investment.
Tamara Tigero and Mark Guthrie both have found the lock-step, eleven-course, twelve-month Master of Science in Finance (MSF) in the College of Business Administration an excellent way to complete a graduate program: Tigero because she wants to finish advanced degree work quickly and return to Chile to launch a teaching career, and Guthrie because he wanted to integrate graduate school into a life that was already filled with work and family. Classes in the MSF take place on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, allowing people like Guthrie to do just that.

Exceptional student Tamara Tigero plans career as university teacher.

Tamara Tigero set a high standard for herself by graduating first in her class from Pontíficia Universidad Católica de Chile in December 2003 with a bachelor's degree in commercial engineering. She has risen to the challenge by maintaining at 4.0 in the MSF, which she began in August 2004.

Executive MBA's international trip explores China.
"It's one thing to hear about Westerners doing business in Asia during a class and another thing to hear from the people themselves," said James Picou, an Executive MBA student who participated in the first-ever mandatory international trip, now part of the program in the Chapman Graduate School.

Picou was one of twenty students and two program alumni who traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong in January 2005. The annual trip is scheduled to follow the fourth or "international quarter," during which the cohort studies international business and global finance.

The Pembroke Pines '05 cohort visited Chinese corporations, foreign companies doing business there, and Chinese government organizations. Sumit Kundu, professor of international business, and Sarah Perez, director of the program, accompanied the group.

"It was a wonderful learning experience for everyone," Perez said. "The students were exposed to a number of different industries and types of companies, which gave them a good understanding of business in the region."
