Spark for ARC warms heart of mother, BBA+ group, and community.
Ana Lorenzo, a BBA+ Weekend student in the College of Business Administration, is used to challenges.

As a sixteen-year veteran at Regions Bank, she faces professional challenges in her job as an international trade finance portfolio manager in the international trade finance department.

She also faces academic challenges in the BBA+ Weekend program—an accelerated, value-added offering that enables students with an associate of arts degree to complete a business degree in management or international business in seven twelve-week sessions.

Going beyond the call of duty pays off for graduate.
Andres Asion (BBA ’98) didn’t plan for a career in real estate. He majored in marketing and international business in the College of Business Administration, took a real estate course as an elective, and sat for the real estate exam in Florida.

“I thought about doing real estate for the heck of it—as a part-time job ‘till I landed a marketing position',” he said. “I started getting busier and busier, and it dawned on me that maybe real estate would work for a career.”

What got him busy was his involvement when he was 21 in the Yacht Club at the Portofino project for Cervera Real Estate.

Fourth International BizFest showcases student organizations and more.
Each year, International BizFest gets better. Packed with performances, competitions, giveaways, and delectable international cuisine, the four-hour event provides a lively setting for the college’s business student organizations to get the word out about what they do and how students can get involved. Representatives set up tables on the Ryder Building’s south lawn, making it easy and fun for attendees to see the range of outlets for their talents and interests.

One of the many hard-working students at the gathering, Lourdes Lourido, president of Alpha Kappa Psi, thought the fourth annual International BizFest topped them all.

College graduate has gem of an idea.
Fabio Pinto (BBA ’03; MIB ’04; MSF ’05) has been in the jewelry business since he was eighteen. From a position doing sales and public relations promoting jewelry in his home city of Rio de Janeiro, he has moved methodically through his career. He opened his first Amici Gioielli Fine Jewelers, an appointment-only establishment in Bal Harbour, five years ago. In December, 2005, he launched an elegant retail shop by the same name in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Coconut Grove.

“I have learned to be patient,” said Pinto, who completed a six-month program at the Gemological Institute of America in New York in addition to his three degrees from the College of Business Administration and who has built his client base carefully from referrals. “I think it’s important to create a solid foundation and move on little by little.”

Graduate shifts from hotels to cars.
A year ago, Brent Graef (BBA ’95) had a high-level position at a high-class establishment: the luxurious Four Seasons Palm Beach. As room manager, he oversaw the activities of the front desk personnel, the concierge and bell men, the staffs of housekeeping, the beach, and a kids’ club.

But a love of cars, a desire not to move, and an itch to own his own business converged to lead him in a whole new direction. He’s now partnering with his brother-in-law, Mitch Yngber (BA ’92), in a year-old venture, AAutotech of Kendall. The original AAuto Tech has been in Coral Gables for 21 years.

When Ivania Padilla walks at the May 2, 2006, commencement, it will be on the heels of completing an internship in Washington, DC, in the Office of Continuous Learning and Career Management in the Department of Labor (DOL). The internship has given her a great opportunity to put into practice what she has learned in her coursework leading to a bachelor of business administration with a double major in human resources (HR) and management from the College of Business Administration.

“I found out about the internship through the Office of Career Services and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU),” she said.

International groups of students tackle international business problems.
Onyeka Okoli looks at his family’s transportation business in Nigeria differently, now that he’s completed the Master’s Project in International Business. The project falls at the conclusion of coursework in the College of Business Administration’s Master of International Business (MIB) program.

“We offer a number of projects each semester to fulfill this requirement,” said Tomislav Mandakovic, associate dean of the Alvah H. Chapman Graduate School of Business, faculty director of the MIB, and overseer of the capstone project. “The projects must have an international nature and be a current strategic or operational challenge the organization faces. The organizations also agree to plan to implement the recommendations the students come up with based on their research.”

“I have the best job at IBM,” said aptly-named Joy Dettorre, diversity program manager, IBM Talent, whose joy in her career is palpable. “What could be better than being in a position to bring fresh talent into the company?”

Dettorre serves as project manager of IBM’s Project View, the company’s university recruiting program at the forefront of IBM’s effort to include under-represented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities in its workforce.
